Hey folks! I've been lurking for a few months and finally decided to post. My girlfriends father started giving me error coins as gifts and I have become somewhat interested in them. I'm not a collector by any means... I just like looking for error coins. Before all of my change got tossed in to the truck and used at tolls, but now I inspect every coin. It's kind of fun and can be really interesting. So anyways...

Here is a 1966 dime I got as change today. Does this look like wear and tare or an error? Thanks in advance

Basically what you have is an over polished die, one that has so worn down the surface that the details are no longer the original depth it started out to be, see that around the top of LIBERTY also note the radial flow lines, under the bust. Surface die metal progresses outward with the thousands of pressings.

I can't really tell but I'm pretty sure it's silver. I thought they stopped making silver in 65. Maybe a left over that got incorrectly pressed?

The 66 is on the left in the pic. The right is a regular old 2011 that I had in my pocket

Welcome to the forum, spaishon28,

It's very unlikely that your 66 is silver as clad coinage was adopted for 1965. However, if it is, it should weigh 2.5g, as opposed to 2.268g for a normal clad 1966 dime. The outer layers are probably just lapped over the middle layer of copper, though. Another possibility is silver plating, but that is pretty unlikely as well. I think it's mostly a heavily circulated coin struck by worn, polished dies (to echo CB above).
