This coin is part of a large collection but and in an early 2x2 holder but is under 22 grams in weight. I am thinking a contemporary counterfeit? Not a lot of those out there so I am not familiar with them enough to make a judgement call.

I would be inclined to agree with your assumption. Standard weight 26.73g, and theres no way that coin lost 4g just from circulation! What is odd to me, is that they would counterfeit a 1900-o. Its not a key date, or rarity. In MS the FMV is around $50, so why such a common date? Have you done a magnet check on it? Looking a lil closer, the mint mark seems slightly off center. There was about 40 different varieties, so that may be more common than I think. When in doubt, throw it out. (Not the coin, just the offer, lol!)

Brian, if this coin is a contemporary counterfeit then it was never meant to fool collectors. It was meant to circulate alongside genuine coins.

That is a good point. Its easy for me to forget that what is a collectable to me, was everyday currency a hundred years ago.

I've seen very worn culls measure under 26g, but never under 25g. I'll bet it's magnetic . .

If its a contemporary counterfeit its likely non-magenetic, most contemporary counterfeits of Morgan dollars were struck out of silver, tin, or lead.

If under 22G, has to be a fake.

Contemporary counterfeits typically weighted near the same and were made of melted sterling silver. Remember, they needed to pass the smell test of circulation and at 22g people would easily feel something was off with it.

It might be a yet-unknown contemporary counterfeit not related to the Orleans counterfeits.
