Vatican City, Italy - The first Vatican euro coins bearing Pope Benedict XVI's profile were issued on Tuesday by the Vatican.

Each year the Vatican issues euro coins, that are legal tender and able to be used Europe-wide.

The director of the numismatic office - or the Papal mint, Pierpaolo Francini said, "these are the first coins ever showing Pope Benedict XVI."

While the special editions coins worth euro 5, 10, 50, 20, 50 will only be available to those who have previously applied for them, mostly collectors.

The Papal mint is selling the special edition coins through an application system.

Previous sales of similarly popular items have sparked scuffles among long lines of people at the Vatican.

The two gold coins, worth euro 20 - equivalent to $23.50 - and euro 50 ($58) respectively, will cost the collectors euro 160 ($188) and euro 400 ($469) respectively.

Two silver coins, worth euro 5 ($5.80) and euro 10 ($11.70) will cost euro 50 ($58) and euro 60 ($70.40).

The Vatican said it is planning to mint over 3,000 gold coins and 13,000 silver ones.

Also being issued is a two euro coin ($2.35) celebrating World Youth Day, displaying Cologne Cathedral, which saw Pope Benedict XVI journey to his native Germany in August on his first foreign trip abroad as pontiff.

The coin features a star over Cologne Cathedral.

This coin will cost euro 11 ($12.90) and the Vatican is planning to mint a maximum of 100,000 coins.

bobby131313, I would like to know where you got this information as the Vatican has aleady released its mint sets and proof sets so if any other coins are released they would have to be special (as you said) sets with the authorization of the EU which I would doubt for 2005. I know the 2006 coins will have the new Pope but don't see how they can change any of the 2005 offerings at this time. (December?) I am not absolutely sure but, if memory serves me correct, the gold and silver for 2005 had Pope John Paul II so something is definitely amiss here. I don't know anyone who has received the silver (gold is impossible to get) commemoratives as I didn't order them but they are usually shipped by this time. Apparently there is some major scrambling going on at the Vatican, as well as, the Italian Mint if this information is correct. Should be interesting to see how it plays out. Also find it interesting you didn't mention the $1 or $2 euro coins which are required, plus the one and Two Cent coins, for a full set of coins? Perhaps this was a news release for 2006 dated coins?

Yes, the Vatican raised their prices considerably since 2002 after they saw what their offerings were bringing on the secondary market. Proof sets are now $125 each!!! And, the secondary market has dropped considerably but still very good for new coins.
I might add that NO Vatican City coins go into circulation as ALL are sold to collectors. They are very limited due to EU restrictions based on populations and the Vatican, well its about 140 acres, isn't it? Usually about 10,000 to 15,000 proof sets and 60 to 80,000 mint sets. The sivers are issued in the 10,000 range and the gold is very limited and with demand, in 2002 from collectors, at a million orders, well you can see the problem. Their customer list has been frozen since 2003 and issues are really being spread out on a one per customer basis as far as I can see! Well, unless you are my wife, who manages to get one of everything she orders! Go figure!
