Hey ya'll hope everyone is doing well and keeping the business going while I was gone

So, I took a break from collecting because I started University last September, and was hoping to get back into it over summer break. Now that I'm back from school and working a 9-5 job and volunteering for the rest, looks like I won't really be able to give the hobby the justice it deserves.

I'm kinda unloading my collection now because it's just been sitting in the bank locker for a while. I got rid of most of my lower-value coins last year, so now I've just got a few gems left that I was hesitant to sell before. I have one specific coin that I have a question about...

A PCGS 1914 $10 graded MS-65. I can't seem to find any auction prices realized. I've checked ebay, HA and the usual places. There are a few for BIN/OBO but they're overpriced IMO

http://www.ebay.ca/itm/1914-Canadia...141918768887
http://www.collectorscorner.com/Pro...?id=25818250

Would appreciate some input on what would be a fair price to list this at. I don't want to take the chance with an auction so I'd rather just list it as a BIN/OBO.

Another question: is ebay the right outlet to be selling this? The most expensive coin I've sold on ebay was for $1200 and I see this one going for a fair bit more. Would an auction house be worth exploring? I know I'm gonna get lowballed if I take it to a dealer.

Thanks in advance.

I recommend you keep your collection because it will also gain value over time. Unless you really need the money now, I would advise to keep your collection. While you may find you can't focus on it now, I've seen colllectors get back into it after they have stopped because of their life. You get still get back in the hobby you just need to wait until you have a steady job. So, even if you can't collect now, you could in the future.

You won't be able to replace a coin like THAT easily in a few years time.

You will most probably be stuck with other expenses, such as a mortgage, personal loan or to pay back a student loan, or whatever other expenses that life may throw at you.

Keep it if you can; it may well form the centerpiece of your collection in the future, when you have a bit more time to get back into numismatics.

Gold coins like this series due to the way it was sold by the RCM created a mixed up market place to put it kindly, only the highest graded coins garner much interest and a lot of the coins were overgraded by PCGS, NGC, depending on who sent in the coins. If you need to sell probably half of what the Winnipeg coin is asking, ebay BIN is way to go

I think insinuations that TPGs (especially NGC/PCGS) grade coins differently based on their source is a far fetched conspiracy theory. I deal for NGC and I get no breaks as a dealer...I can assure you of that. Secondly, the number of coins that are available in the market place from this series (12/13/14) far exceeds demand after the horde has been released to the public. A 1914 $10 PCGS MS-64 recently sold for $900.00 USD. Although there is always a market for a few good coins, but with 340 coins sitting in PCGS holders at MS65 and 7 at MS66 (add to that NGC and ICCS), I suspect the MV for this coin is well under 3K. You can thank the RCM for killing the collector market for this series.

I am not sure they killed the market, I think they largely opened it up to a whole new group of collectors, I would probably never have started the series if it was not for the BOC release, now I have 2/6 and am actively looking to complete the set. Prior to the release, I can rarely remember seeing these coins change hands, now I see them quite frequently.

I would agree with TheCoinHunter on price and overall prices have declined, but that was due to an artificial scarcity, it is not like the RCM made new coins and sold them as if they were old ones.

If the BOC release was good for this series there would be big demand for these coins when they come on the market place, most common ungraded coins goes for a touch over bullion, there is very little demand. A friend had a PCGS MS 63 5 dollar 1913 a really nice graded 63, one day it was worth around 3 grand, after the BOC mess there is no demand for his coin due partly to a label and a large number of 63, 64 and even a couple 65 came out, he tried to sell it just after the BOC release, most dealers offered around 1500.00 and a few dealers didn't even want it. Sort of like BOC adding 2000, 1948 dollars just found in their vault and selling them onto the marketplace, it will destroy the 48 market

Just FYI there are 13,000+ $10 coins in this series holdered in PCGS holders, most in mint state. 2300+ $5 also mostly in MS. 5000+ and 2000+ respectively in NGC holders. Sub 1000 for both in ICCS holders. That's a lot of coins.

And not a lot of buyers. IMHO you need to really ask why , with sky high gold prices in CAD you would ever pay over bullion for these 5 and 10 dollar gold coins.

Why not sell it on ebay with a BIN/OBO. Due to the fact that few 65's have been sold at auction and there is
a huge supply of 65's out there. I would think that you would be better off moving it now than later.
Concerning an earlier post about a 1913 PCGS 63 Five Dollar coin going from $3000 before the BOC release to
$1500 just after the release that is incorrect. Actually they are priced very similar now as before the release. I think
the poster was referring to the 1913 PCGS 63 Ten Dollar coin. Heritage sold one for $2990 in 2007 while other
PCGS 63's were selling for an average of $1900 at the time. It must have been a nice 63.
There is no doubt that people holding certain grades and denominations took a haircut but IMO the BOC release was
great for the hobby.
