Going through my extra mint sets and checking for varieties and came across this penny. The only "corrosion" on this penny is in the SE where the possible PRM would be located. The penny is still in the mint cellophane and as far as I can tell, the seal is still intact. Would the corrosion be on the exposed zinc?
You are correct. The plating was split and now the exposed zinc is corroding. I have no idea how much more it will corrode with the available oxygen in that sealed pouch.

Here is another 1985 D that has the same split without corrosion. The zinc is silver colored under the microscope but not in the picture. So are these PRM's or something different?
When asking about RPM's, it's best if you give at the least a pix of date and mintmark. Positioning, angles, all go into attributing process. Also shooting through plastic distorts too much. Only thing I can compare to is this: http://www.coppercoins.com/lincoln/...ie_state=lds
Crazy, I hear ya on the plastic distortion, but I prefer to try and keep my mint sets whole and undisturbed. I will uncrop the pics to include date for further evaluation.
