VF cleaned..likely no premium over melt, but would sell quick for melt i'd imagine as anyone would rather this over a piece of bullion.

I also agree with VF cleaned with no premium(or maybe a very very small one) over melt. I would agree with dollarman in that it will move quick I know I personally would buy this over bullion.

I figured that it wasn't worth much more than melt but I hoped at least a 10% premium since it is 100+ years old. Now, with the gold value being around $417 the last time I checked, would asking $500 be reasonable for this? I bought it in 2012 or so when the price of gold was significantly higher than it is now. I've got $500 into it so I'm on the fence about selling it. Perhaps just hanging on to it until gold goes up again is the best bet if the general census says it's got no Numi value. Thanks for the replies, and gladly welcome more.

hang onto it if that's the case...i got mine a year or two ago for $550 and it was MS from the bank hoard..when resold not much profit was gained. the market is saturated and if the coin isn't UNC it isn't worth any premium to anyone. yours priced at $500 would sit around and not sell IMO.

i want to add that I change my grade to VF, details, cleaned with rim damage..the obverse has a rim nick which I felt was acceptable but upon further examination the obverse anso has a large area of the edge flattened above "ET"..sorry.

Wow, that's less than melt. I'll try my luck at $500 and see what happens. If it doesn't sell, at least I can tell my wife I tried.

Honestly I wouldn't even bother trying at $500 as it's much too high for that condition you will end up wasting too much time. Just hang on to it for at least few more years I'm sure gold will bounce up eventually for you to recoup your $500.

I'm not terribly worried how much it's worth since it was my wife's idea to sell it to fund a trip I don't even want to take. Thanks again for the replies

Every time I see one of these well worn, thus well traveled, $5 golds I pause to ponder of a long gone age when it was just another coin in circulation. That coin would be the equivalent of $2,000+ in today's money. What would they be shopping for?

I've wondered that as well. Not too mention the name of hands that have held it.

We too often get so very focused on a coin or bills rarity and condition. What variety it is. I am 70 now and can still remember when I was 10 years old and finding a coin, in circulation, with a crown on the obverse head. That was the start of 60 years of coin collecting.
I sold an MS63 1913 $5 gold many years ago and regret it now. I have decided I am going to purchase a $5 & $10 gold but in well circulated condition, so I can hold it in my hand and bring back the memories of why I started collecting coins in the first place.
I know, I am rambling. No more posts from me on this subject.
