Most likely the copper was chemically removed. You can see traces of copper on the obverse at 10:00.

, note the pitted look, Abe's chair has been dissolved from inside the Memorial, that would be there with the amount (slight) of wear if just an unplayed zinc planchet. Nice try Johnny in the Garage with Daddy's battery acid!
