I got out my collection of Kooks today and was disappointed by the amount of darker rim toning on them. I collected a complete set from 1990 to present and many of the more valuable years (2000-2009) display this dark toning on the rims. Some are worse than others. I was very careful to try to keep them in a better storage environment so this wouldn't happen. Has anyone else experienced this with their kookaburras? I'm wondering if it is just common for this particular coin as my Libertads and other one ounce silvers have not had this happen to them.

If it is a bullion coin only, good or bad toning will not affect the value; purchase appeal to others may be slightly affected.
A bullion dealer would not worry at all.

I have never seen bad toning on bullion Kooks.

BTW, the most common grade for these should be around MS66 to 69, but MS60's are not valued at much below the MS66 level. Bullion dealers handle these like pieces of silver, (which they are); they don't worry too much if they are knocked into each other, and are just klanked and stacked. They haven't the time to be bothered with protective packaging; that just gets in the way, and makes their business less efficient.
So as a stasher, neither do I.

If they are proof bullion coins, that may be a different matter.

Whenever I am lucky enough to pick up any bullion silver coin at below it's ASW value, (which happens rarely, but it DOES happen), it will just be added to my junk silver stash. Toning, good or bad, is not considered by me, when I pay good money.

So don't worry about the toning.

I feel your pain. Kooks are a beautiful wonderful series that probably falls into at least semi-numismatics. When you put together a full set from 1990 to present...it is definitely not bullion only, but a coin collector item. The dark toning will possibly affect the value (although there are toning fans out there).

I have a complete collection of kooks that demonstrates some rim toning on the early years-- but I rescued it from a Littleton album. How are you storing yours? If it is in an album, I would switch to airtites and some way to display those. But that is just my preference.

I collect a lot of Australian bullion coins (every bullion series, carded and uncarded). One thing I love about them is that they do not discolor very much at all. At least not mine. Except the ones I bought in an album, as mentioned already. None of mine bought new and stored in capsules have yet to tone.

Airtites are a good idea. I will look into them. I look at this series beyond the bullion price. The earlier years are selling on ebay for a much higher premium over their bullion value. When the spot is $15.50 an ounce some Kooks are selling for $45-50. I have them stored away now, otherwise, I'd attach a picture.

Here is an example of my kooks...in the first picture, the 1990 from the Album. In the second picture you can see some other minor toning, also from the album, on the earlier coins. I took them out of the album and put them in airtites. I will still probably just replace all the toned ones with nice white examples.

Early Kookaburra releases are very susceptible to toning considering many were released without casing

Many of these were re-minted in later years with a capsule so perhaps if you want a tone free set to seek these out

Having said thatI have also noticed toning on kookaburras that were capsuled up to about 2001
