Hey,

I posted this on forumancientcoins like a week ago. I'll try here, because You had a discussion on similar topic 5 years ago.

I admit I didn't know about "Black Sea Hoard" before. I read a lot today and I honestly don't see the details that are to be give-aways for Bulgarian forgery. What give-aways I mean:

- first of all after some search I didn't find identical dye on other Mesembria diobols marked as fake
- then I checked nose plate that in fakes resembles nose a bit too much. In genuine coin it should go straight down from forehead part. This part is a tiny bit worrying because nose plate in my coin is, very slightly, but still elevated (like 0,1mm) above forehead plate
- third thing checked was eye sockets - in fakes they resemble eyes, with eyelids (both upper and lower). I think mine looks just like in diobols presented in Wildwinds, for sure no heavy eyelids I saw on some known fakes
- also faceplate on fakes is often shaped like face, with a bit round cheeks. I don't see it on my coin
- hair should hang from crest of the helmet (OK), not from around faceplate

BUT, I read somewhere that fakes from Black Sea Hoard often have a yellowish color that comes off with simplest cleaning. My coin has it (You can see it around helmet on obverse and on most of reverse).

Do any of You have some experience with those?

I'd love to hear Your oppinions. This is the coin:

Hang in there Wojtek, its mid-day here, may take a while for the experts to get off work! Can you post pix of side? That may indicate a casting seam. It does appear fake to my untrained eye, too perfect and round, no split edges...even if it is a copy, an interesting coin, like the helmet!

My gut says no.

That isn't any gauruntee of anything but I don't like the style of the helmet.

As you can see my avatar is this type of coin and knowing there are many forgeries I bought mine from a trusted dealer.

I stress just because I don't fancy yours doesn't mean it is no good maybe others opinion may vary.

My one...

This isn't my collecting area but just to let you know in that discussion
there was a quote..
Quote:
While I continue to tread lightly on all coins from this region, I do not recall seeing and condemned coin of Mesembria that had the letters (NI) below the helmet.

Thank You both.

Paul, I know this comment. I think it was made by Mr Smith in 2012 thread. And that's true, on tables showing known dies of this obol, I didn't see letters.

Is there a way to ask particular members to contribute to thread?

From that old thread, most of those members no longer post here. But we have folks here that should be able to help you.
