If you're looking for an inexpensive digital camera with macro capabilities, you might want to consider the Nikon S51. At a street price of around $175, it does a decent job of capturing coin details without a lot of hassle and technical complexity.
Here's a hand-held test shot at 1/125 sec @ f11. Despite some off-center softness, I consider the results more than acceptable for quick pics online or for selling coins.
That certainly seems to be a respectable picture, KurtS. If the camera is supported, I'd bet you could improve that sharpness a bit, as well. You're right...at less than $200, this is a good solution for coin pics.
