You might want to jump on this if you collect interesting world coins. There is a Falkland Islands 2017 bullion coin that has "Britannia Rules the Waves" on its reverse. It was produced by Pobjoy Mint, who was forced to halt production after they were sued for copy-write infringement for the use of the word Britannia. Only a little over 7,000 of this coin was produced and sold before it was stopped and the inscription removed for future type 2.

They're on ebay now for about 33 dollars, which is a bit high for one ounce bullion, but it might be sought after when word gets out about its scarcity and its interesting story.

I find it bizarre that copyright can be applied to the word Britannia. It's the Roman name for the province and the lady personification of our island.

Still an interesting story.

It's probably a bit more nuanced than how I presented it, but yeah, I also think it's interesting.

I accidentally bought four of these instead of the usual two. This accident turned out to be okay in this case.

This is similar in numbers to the recent Ghana 100 cedis issue versus 5 cedis. They ended up with only 5k if that and 45k of the correct coin

Congrats on your mistake @crazyglue.

I also had a "mistake" but it was on their end.
They pulled the wrong coins when they filled my order.
They offered me a refund or an exchange of the correct coin in a new version since they are sold out of the original ones.

Just my luck!

I agree. The trademark violation is presumably because the word "Britannia" was used on a large silver coin.

I reckon the Bank of England should sue the Royal Mint for trademark violation, then. They put Britannia on a large silver coin, way back in 1804. The Royal Mint coins are clearly inferior copies of this.
