Have any of the decimal coins been demonetized and will no longer be accepted by merchants. I saw a ebay posting claiming the large 50 p and 10p coins aren't accepted anymore? Is this true? I have been picking them up for far below exchange value over here and may need to stop if true. What of the decimal coins are no longer accepted? Thanks.

As far as I know, they've been withdrawn, but not demonetized. They remain legal tender. Merchants may be reluctant to accept them, but I don't think many will flatly refuse. Banks will still take them, but vending machines probably won't.

I had people rejecting them in 1997, I remember once having a large 50p but hadn't realised where it came from.
I got a very nice EC hands large 50p last year for 25p, but it's supposed to be work 1 pound 50. A decent normal large 50 is worth up to about 2 pounds, but I would have thought that you could go into a bank and get them for 50p. The likelyhood is that americans got them for 75 cents as the exchange rate was around 2000 and now they are worth a dollar but people are still getting rid of them for 75 cents.

Would it be good to hold on to the 10p and 50p coins? I am so confused, ha ha.

Hi All, The Big 50p and 10p were actually demonetised, The Big 50p was 28th Feb 1998, The Big 10p 30th June 1993, also other Decimal coins demonotised were, the Wee Decimal Halfpence 31 Dec 1984, and the Big 5p 31 Dec 1990.
Demonetisation of the Old LSD were, Half Crown 31 Dec 1969, Florin 30 June 1993 (Re-denominated as 10p 30 Aug 1971), The Shilling 31 Dec 1990 (Re-denominated as 5p 30 Aug 1971), The Sixpence 30 June 1980 (Re-denominated as 2.5p 30 Aug 1971), The Brass 3d 31 Aug 1971, The Old Penny 31 Aug 1971, and the old halfpenny 31 July 1969.
Also another demonetisation was the old one pound note, The notes were demonetised on 11th March 1988. .
I will finish on this note as Legal Tender was mentioned earlier, did you know that,
20p and 50p coins are legal tender up to a total value of 10 pounds.
5p and 10p coins are legal tender up to a total value of 5 pounds.
1p and 2p coins are legal tender up to a total of 20 pence.

Hope that helps with your enquires.

Does that mean if travelling to Britain. I would be able to take all of them and expect to exhange the demonetized coins at a bank for current coinage of equal value up to a given amount. I have a bunch of the large 5 10 and 50 P coins and would love to be able to convert them if I go over there. Or am I stuck with them. I guess stores won't take them now.

Not Sure on that one LP, I actually work in a store, and I do know that we DONT accept any demonetised coins at all, although I wouldn'tknock back the odd old greenback (pound note) that very rarely gets handed over. I would say there may be a chance the banks would change them reluctantly for you!

@greeniejim- it's nice to see that even after changing to the decimal standard, GB persists in having one of the most confusing monetary systems in the West!

i really liked those brass 3p coins... shame they got rid of them.
