I'm a big fan of Nassim Nicholas Taleb, author of the best seller "The Black Swan", philosopher and all-around cool guy. I stumbled upon this article he wrote about the Mediterranean ethnicity, and he uses statuary and a gold aureus from the Severan period to make his point.

Until Europeans landed in Western Australia in the 1700's, black swans were the stuff of fable.
Europe only knew white swans.
I don't know if the two species are different enough to allow breeding or not.
