I received this in a coin roll today and noticed what looks like the number 100 above the bust. I have no idea if this is supposed to be there or if it's not. I'd appreciate any advice on this coin!
This type of mistake is very common, I must have tens of those. Usually the number one is the most visible, in your coin the other numbers are also evident, which is a good thing. Here is a pic of one of my better ones:
Very cool... and strong. I suppose that is because the data is incuse on the coin, which means it is raised on the die, and able to provide an element of relief to the clash.

A while ago I made this pic to explain how this happens. To me, it's very likely caused by a strike without a blank. But it may not explain how it used to happen in the late 1600's coins, when the coinage wasn't automated.
