Wow.. would someone actually pay $81,000 on ebay for a coin? Does that happen?
Here is the listing:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/1916-D-MERC...201869774489

Yes, it is a slabbed and graded coin, but just curious if things this value ever even sell on ebay?

$81,000 is a bit over my monthly colin budget.. by about $80,900....

Regards,

Michael

Yes, people do buy such items. This particular seller has tons of high end items, and although they are relatively new, they have 100% feedback.

You can make them an offer

Mike , yes that's a crazy price but I believe there are diehards that pay up . Think of it this way , the buyer does not have to pay a buyers fee from a major auction house . Considering , it has been verified and graded by a reputable grading company , so why not buy the coin from E-Bay .

Unlike an auction house, ebay has a maximum final value fee of, I think $400. So the seller will pay no commission on the value over a $4000 sales price which make it a great venue to sell high value items. You still have to use Paypal which charges a flat 1.8%, but that is nothing compared to Heritages' 20% buyer fee which essentially comes out of the seller's pocket as buyers will take it into account when buying as well as the 5-10% seller fee.

Thanks for the info.. so, sounds like it actually could be a "win" for both the buyer and the seller.

So, given my $100 monthly coin budget, it will take me only 810 months (67.5 years) to save-up for this coin...

If I up my budget to $200 a month, then it can be mine in only a short 34 years...

Got to love this hobby!

Seldom if ever. This seller uses ebay primarily for advertising. A prospective buyer can then contact them directly and negotiate a better price with zero ebay or Paypal fees involved.

A quick check of their feedback will confirm this.

If you check ebay sold for US coins only, the top seller was a 1885 Proof 68 Morgan that sold for $79,800. There are over 30 sales after that sold for more than $10,000.

Keep in mind this is only for US coins and only for SOLD lots.

Seldom if ever do coins of this price ($81k) sell on ebay. RareCoinWholesaler hasn't sold a coin on ebay (with feedback) in two months and none are anywhere near this price in the last year.

The answer to the OP's question? These high dollar coins are on ebay for advertisement.

P.S. That proof Morgan was from 80% feedback live auction "shill" seller.

Mike,

Offer seller $40K, then you cut your payment in half.

A coin from the same seller. I can say I've held this coin before.

If I was genuinely interested (which I am not), I would need to do due diligence that the slab was genuine, irrespective of the reputation of the seller.
The stakes are just too high to just accept.

Very tempting to spend $hundreds to reproduce the slab, in the hope of getting $thousands in return.

Perhaps a guarantee from the seller, then get it re slabbed at my nomination, would be good approach.

I tried PCGS cert verification, and the gold coin from Eliasberg PCGS value is $1,150,000, so is only $419,800 over price guide.

You can throw the price guide out the window on that one
