In going through some dimes of my mother I noticed that some have different lusters. I'm not talking about some used more than others. Looking at some of the dimes that are in almost uncirculated condition one has a clear luster and the other a more matalic finish. Both are in great condition and same year. What makes the difference? Thanks for the answers ahead of time.

Just from your verbal description I'd say the difference is die state (early vs. late).

I agree. Details are lost as the die wears, which affects the overall look of the coin.

That is the most likely answer to the question, but there could be other factors as well. Hard to know without seeing the coins.

Maybe one has been polished, and the other hasn't?

Photos of your comparison coins would help us answer more specifically.

Luster is often changed in color because of environmental contact - where the coin has been. That's called toning and that also may be the answer to your question.
