Okay here we go.  1 point for a cross 1 point for a gate,...the reverse shows a portcullis, which is a heavy grate designed to slide down to block a gateway to a town or fortress. How about India, Vaghelas of Gujarat, 1244-1304 Anonymous Gadhaiya Paisa 13-14mm, 4.57g  I don't have calipers, but it measures 13mm across the Y-axis, and a hair under 14mm across the X axis. I could write pages about the tricky art of attributing these, but it makes the most logical sense to attribute them to the Vaghelas, who were overthrown by the Arabs in 1304 after 60 years in power. So: 13-13.99mm - 3 points Dateless with span of 60 years - 3 points Not perfectly round - 2 points (is this not-round enough?) Lots o' dots! - 1 point |

To determine if something is 'perfectly round' in cases like these, I just crop the picture with a 1:1 circle ratio. Your coin is an oval. Using that method, pepactonius also gets a point in this catagory (it is very close to being perfectly round, but not quite there). The best example I could think of didn't have any crosses, gates, or (significant amounts of) dots. However, the moment I saw the point system for this round, I immediately thought of the set it belonged to...   ...the wire kopek type set attempt. Attributing this piece was somewhat tricky, due to the double strike. By now, however, I am fairly confident that this is probably KG 486, and definitely from the third emission of Mikhail Feodorovich - which dates it to 1626-35 (narrower dates are given occasionally - e.g. Numista says 1629; but there's definitely no actual date on the coin). I hadn't checked the exact diameter (misplaced our calipers again), but it's definitely somewhere in the 13-13.99 mm range. So... - 3 points for diameter - 2 points for period and lack of date - 2 points for non-roundness I don't think any other points apply to it, so my total should be 7. (In retrospect, I have another coin that might score as high as 8; but my photos of it had been misplaced, and it's way too dark to just take pics of it normally. Wouldn't beat Finn's entry, anyway.) |

Thanks all! I honestly didn't expect to win that one! This time around, I'll keep it real simple - show me the coin you hoard the most! Within the scope of same country, denomination, year, and mintmark if applicable, the most duplicates you have the better! Back in 2009 I was at ground zero when our cash office got a frosty new box of 2009 LP2 "Formative Years" cents. I got my paws on 24 solid rolls before the manager stepped in to stop me. That's 1,200 of the same coin!  You get one point for every duplicate you have, so everyone has at least one point! And go!  |
