Sorry for the combined images; these are the only pics I have handy of the half of my Japanese commemoratives that I have imaged. 1964 Tokyo Olympics, 100 and 1,000 yen. Coinage was a major channel for propaganda and spreading news for the Romans - many of these could be called commemorative for celebrating specific recent events or anniversaries of distant ones. In Republican times, one of the first offices that a junior politician held was the office of moneyer, which he could use to magnify himself through celebrating the triumphs of his ancestors. M. Fourius L.F. Philus silver denarius - Ancestor won a victory over the Gaul  Q Thermius - Ancestor saved the life of a fellow Roman by slaying an enemy on the battlefield (this was a big deal and a huge honor)  Marcius Philippus - Claimed relation to Rome's legendary king Ancus Marcius, and his ancestor (great grandfather?) oversaw the construction of the Aqua Marcia aqueduct to Rome  |
