The 1969 large date dime with first known example shown to coin dealer Peter Degraaf in 1970. He saw the 1953-1968 reverse master die was repunched to 1969 and used in error. The normal/new 1969 had remodelled schooner, date and details. He contacted the RCM re: error to no avail. In 1977 coin dealer Jeremy Day made the first purchase of the large date. He contacted RCM and got the same - nothing. It was added to the Charlton Catalogue in 1978.
Has the RCM ever acknowledged or confirmed that some 1969's were inadvertently stuck with repunched old reverse?
Thank you

You are beating a dead horse... anyone who was working at the RCM at the time (1969), if alive, is well into their retirement now...

I live in Ottawa, and I speak with mint directors on occasion. Do not kid yourself if you think they actually care about production nuances and varieties such as this. The latest $250/$2500 kilo gold mule was a huge embarrassment for the the RCM - to the mint, that is an error in Quality Control. I use that term loosely, because it does not refer to the quality of the strike, frosting or coins being produced today - They only care about quality control in terms of "fishy" or mint sport items getting smuggled out of the mint) and despite recent events to the contrary (e.g., gold pucks, creative accounting with gold, etc.), they care about their finances, such as sales, bullion, etc.

The best source of information on the 1969 Large Date 10c, and the 1973 Large Bust 25c is probably the information that the former curator of the Bank of Canada Museum, Dr. Jim Haxby, acquired and reported on due to his persistence and interest in the Canadian decimal series. I have emailed Dr. Haxby, perhaps he'll reply to this thread for you.

The short answer to whether the RCM has acknowledged the 1969 large date 10c is yes, unofficially. I got the story from the then Chief Engraver. Because of the way the RCM was making matrices for successive years of a given denomination, the design gradually spread, reducing the size of the "flat" at the rim. When the flat got too small and/or the design got too mushy, a new reduction was made and the process started over. The 1969 large date 10c wasn't an error, it was simply the end of the line for the punch used to make the first matrix for that year. It was decided very quickly that a new reduction would have to be made and a major design remodel occurred (the small date variety) in the process. The rarity of the 1969 large date suggests that it was the output of a single die. Whether that die was put into production deliberately or accidentally I don't know.

A fascinating insight into how sometimes a mundane production matter for the Mint becomes droolworthy numismatic errata down the line. And perhaps a good moment to poke a little fun at ourselves.

The circulated condition of many of the known '69 LD's suggests to me that the error was genuine in nature, as does the fact that there are documented accounts of them being found in the wild. To me it's more interesting (if less valuable) than the fabled '36 dot 1c/10c.
