I will try the acetone. Do you think it would help this penny too? I had bought two 1911s pennies from the same guy a while ago for $5 each and here is the other one. I was a little bummed because they both had issues but for $5 I couldn't go wrong.   |

Neither one looks natural to me should I post better pics of the 1921s? Sorry if they aren't clear enough.

Buckwill, here's your problem, yes, this 1911s does look cleaned as if it was washed with a high astringent soap and toothbrush w/ elbow grease. Some cleanings can be made better as eye appeal,, but damage has been done. To what extent the damage is determines the overall value...which is why a TPG will subtract 2-3 grade levels from a MS coin to an EF details, harshly cleaned rating. This is why my first post cast doubt on "woodies"  , sorry. I have "played" with cleaning "techniques" on junk coins just to see what the results would be, some of my coins turned out "streaky" like yours. This was mostly due to multiple methods of wrong cleaning, using an acidic base then an alkaline compound. It was removing uneven layers of grime and possibly the surface patina. Once this was done, the point of no return was passed. The only thing I could do was attempt to apply a false patina, darkening to a dull brown which was even less eye appealing. It also tended to rub off rather easily!  Bottom line, acetone probably won't change anything, coins have already had any organic materials wholly removed. Acetone will just remove any recent air/hand interjections.  |

Woodies are quite attractive to a certain subset of collectors (raises hand). Here's one of a few from my collection:   I don't exhaustively seek them to the exclusion of everything else, but if one shows up I'm likely to throw money at it.  In my anecdotal experience, 1921-S is by a wide margin the most likely date to find with an improper alloy mix. They're common enough so that I'm being quite picky about that particular issue, and am seeking something outstanding from that date before opening the wallet. 1909-P is probably second on the list, but a ways behind. |

It's difficult to make some sort of precise call on that, but I have the goal of eventually assembling a full Wheatie date/mintmark set of Woodies. Near as I can see from having been looking for them for almost a decade now, it is quite possible to achieve this goal. Anecdotally, it's the more recent dates which are the more difficult. |
