Hello all,

I picked up this 1899-P Australia Victoria Gold Sovereign recently.

The pics are not great. They were taken under sub-optimal light conditions with an iPhone. The coin is in an old 2 by 2 as well.

I tried to capture as much of the "flaws" as possible.

The coin looks very nice in hand. Great "eye appeal". IMHO.

Any assistance on grading and/or value is greatly appreciated.

Thank you!

Some remaining luster, but in the legends only.
Most of these coins were minted as a backing to the banknote supply, and for international payment, but it seems as if this particular example may have seen some circulation.

VF Australian grading.

Thanks (again) sel_691.

Is it worth much over spot?

You are fortunate enough to have the scarcest (not rare) date / mm combinations for this type, with Australian minted sovereigns.
691,000 P sovereigns were minted,
where typically for this period, 2.5 to 4.5 million veiled (old) head Australian minted sovereigns were struck.

NGC Coin Values lists the 1899P in VF at U.S.$625,
where all of the more common date / mm's for this type are valued at U.S. $325, (in other words, bullion value).

This coin in Gem Uncirculated is a low $tens of thousands coin.

Sweet!

I normally just buy sovereigns because they are a lot prettier and there's more variety than modern bullion coins.

So this was a pleasant surprise.

Rest in Peace

Nice score if you purchased close to mint. I'd be at EF-45 for US grading.

Thank you moxking.

As I've become more interested in sovereigns along with other non-US coinage I've become increasing exposed to the European Coin Grading System. And I'm very glad that I have.

I came across this website recently which explained it in a way I could understand and relate to: http://www.allcoinvalues.com/europe...-system.html

Do you all feel this website's definition and explanation is accurate?
