Hi all. Very new to varieties and errors so I figured I might get some opinions here. Photos attached. I forgot what causes the odd surface on the obverse...can anyone confirm the Wide-AM part? Should I send to to be graded (I probably will want to sell if worthwhile) even with the spot? Appreciate your time. Chris

Not sure what the spots are maybe Die Pitting? Also the Wide AM on the reverse is normal for all 1988 cents. Don't even bother sending it in for grading. It will be a waste of time and money. Normal coin.

Looks like just a crappy job of plating the zinc core.
Rest in Peace

The WAM's are on 1998-2000P LMCs only! Need to get your mints right. On the 1988p+D's are the serif(cross bar on FG) OR no serif varieties. The switch from wide to touching AM came in mid 1992, so if you find a Close AM on a 1992 P/D it is the late year rarity. There are some known 1993P with 92 normal WAM, but EXTREMELY rare.

Got it! Confusing, why on my desk I have notes of all these taped to remind me!

BTW, those are plating bubbles, gas or debris captured under thin copper plating.

Thanks all for chiming in! The only reason I thought to check was because the TPG that starts with a "P" lists it as a variety. I obviously need to study more and rely less on TPG's listings. Y'all are awesome. appreciate ya.

The point CrazyB0 is trying to get across about the 1988-P & D reverse design varieties is correct, but the scarce varieties for the two (reverse of 1989) are indeed the same reverse design known as a " Wide AM" on the 1998-2000 coins. The 1988 with reverse of 1989, and the 1998-2000 "Wide AMs" are all RDV-006. However, when discussing the 1988s, the term " Wide AM" should never be used. The reason is because the normal 1988 reverse, which is RDV-005, also has a gap between the A and M. So even though the rare reverse is technically the same reverse design, calling it a " Wide AM" doesn't make sense. As Crazy said, the pick up point is the style of G used in the designer's initials FG. Here is a link showing all the Memorial cent reverses. There are also links within this link to some of the individual dies, with markers, for the rarer reverse design varieties.

CWBATX keep searching for the good ones there out there. After awhile you will know the RDV's like simple addition. I pretty much was ignorant my first quarter million I searched ( I'm referring here to myself not anyone else) I was too cheap to buy the reading materials and too sure of myself to bother seeking others help. Armed with a 8x loop and Cherrypickers book (an old 5TH edition) I set out to find the 1970 S FS-101.
It never happened. Today I know enough to have all the books on the Lincoln Cent varietys, know there are hundreds of die varietys not in the CPG , and went and purchased some minor and major varietys for comparison. Brother when you do find a good one like a 1988 D RDV-006 I bet ya 50 cents you wont sell it, I just can't sell any of mine I worked too hard for the few dozen I have found. OK I would sell mine for $1,200.00 he he he.

Keep looking man and get them books these old timers have been asked these questions 10 zillion times and answered them all ( no wonder their cranky). No kidding keep searching their still out there. Good luck.

p.s. never ask me about the 1966 DDO FS-101 I get batty and loose my calm.
