I subscribe to a weekly magazine(Numismatic News) that is printed by Krause Publications. Krause sends me a weekly email as a synopsis of all their publications. This week, World Coin News had an article titled "Bicentennial Gives Bligh Rum for His Money" giving the history and numismatic link to the Rum Rebellion and I thought I would share with the Aussie CCFers.

None of the convict fleets had brought any decent supplies of coins to Sydney. From at least 1792 the real currency of New South Wales was rum. It would buy anything. A wife would set you back four gallons. Five gallons had been the reward for capture of Australia's first bush ranger. (Clearly all Australian collectors need a small cask of early 19th century rum in their collection, preferably in at least VG if not gXF condition and certainly unslabbed.)

Sadly, that cost has increased immeasurably(in US terms)--current transactions involve Tiffany & Co--and several visits.

response: the only phenomenon more expensive than a wife, is an ex-wife.

Pretty sure I met my wife after drinking rum. Can't really remember, was a cold night and the rum flowed freely, things get hazy, wow she looks cute, what's your name, wannnna com, hic, home wif me?

If only I has stopped at 4 gallons, I would be barrels and barrels richer now. Sigh.

I love you honey.
