I won the bid for this China Central Bank 5 Yuan Banknote (pick 235) on ebay. As I took a closer look at this one I noticed that the font for the "3" numeral on the obverse and the reverse in the serial number is different from PCGS and PMG graded banknotes of the same type, such as this one going for $57 : http://www.ebay.ca/itm/P-235-Chines...AOSwg3FUgsXR. Furthermore, the 3 numeral on the left side of the obverse appears to be weakly stamped.

Could this be an indication of a possible counterfeit? Or, did the Central Bank have several serial number stamps they used for this year? I would love to hear your verdicts.

The item I bid on: http://www.ebay.ca/itm/Central-Bank....m2748.l2649

Another item on ebay with the same font as the one that I bid on: http://www.ebay.ca/itm/China-5-Yuan...AOSwIWZZh1Jv

EDIT: Now as I look at it, the font for the entire serial number does not match with the PCGS graded example.

I took a look at all of the notes that you have linked. The notes that you purchased look good to me.

The serial number is an over print on the original printing. Weaker serials are a result of less ink on the stamp. It is normal.

The notes have 2 types of embedded colour fibers. I saw both colours on your notes. When you get the notes you should take a closed look to see if the fibers are embedded or printed on. They should not be printed on.

This note has a watermark. Check the watermark carefully. It should be again embedded in the paper and not a light gray print. The watermark is created by thinning out the paper. Your notes are UNC and from the photo the watermarks look real. I have seen cases where the light gray print creates a fake watermark but then the counterfeiters usually wear the note down so it does not look like a print.

There are 2 types of this note and you have the 2nd type.

Thank you for your response. Where is the watermark usually found for banknotes printed by the Central Bank?

It is found inside the white blank circle on the right side of the note. You have to hold up the note to a light source.

These notes were printed by De La Rue. Several of the Central Bank of China and Farmers Bank of China issues printed by De La Rue during this period come with varying serial number types. This is most likely due to the bombing of the Bunhill Row factory during the Blitz; banknote printing had to be sub-contracted to other UK printing firms.
