Maybe we should change this forum title to the Nohope of teaching me to grade.

Based on the comments from the last Two Cents here is what I think.
MS 60 Just.
Problems
the two carbon spots above the I and U they will get worse (Catman)
The Nick under E of Amaerica
The Scar on Lincolns Cheek
The Gash on his sholder
The Spotting in the rest of the feild

So how did I do this time?

To give the coin a grade value, MS-62 IMHO This coin would be rejected by NGC and PCGS for environmental damage ,,Im not sure what ANACS would do ,Probly MS no numerical grade.

By the way you missed the wheat heads on the left side .

The Wheat heads left side is tone so I did not think I should have included it but as it detracts from eye appeal then I guess it should have been.
Thanks for the help, these three coins have given me a much better understanding of Lincoln grading. Time to put them back in their album and stare for a while at the two holes that will probably never be filled.

I want to learn something so I have three open questions

Carbon spots do they grow or multiply or stay the same ...

What environmental damage are we talking about ?

What two holes will never be filled (just plain curious because I love these coins you show but copper goes black on me so I abstain
allthough my friend is doing a copper series from the UK at present )

Carbon spots will grow as time goes by unless the coin is sealed in an Intercept Sheild or similar.
Enviromental Damage is usually some form of corrosion caused by the enviroment the coin was stored in I think in this case Lincoln is surrounded by red hailstones. I am sure some one will corret me if I am wrong on this.
I do not collect copper as a rule the only exception being 2 Cent coins and in that case I am not realy interested in the colour just varieties such as die cracks. So my grading skills and knowlage are well below par.

the two I am missing are the 1909s VDB I think that they are way overpriced. and the 1922D No D Die pair 2 which would require me selling my soul to get one in a grade that would fit with the others.

Nohope is correct, carbon spots will grow ,unless arrested by storage in an inert environment, the red surrounding lincoln is a form of corrosion , often caused by temp changes and humidity but not limited to those environmental conditions,I see them quite often on coins that have been in storage in the older penny books.and some that have been stored in the original paper penny rolls.
I call it copper rust ,I have never heard the exact scientific name for it that I can recall.

Thanks for the explanation
I live at 75 to 85 % humidity nearly all year round
So even the copper eurocents in my pocket get black in a hurry

This type of red seems to be limited to the BU cents I have never seen it on circulated coins.

Just another reason why I like AU Lincolns, especially for my book collections.
