I have been looking through my collections and finding lots of little errors (or so I think) and I am curious as to which are actually the most valuable. I understand the more obvious the better and it also depends on the piece. I am just wondering if there are any particular subtle errors that tend to be more sought after? Thanks for helping out, trying to figure out what to look for ...

I am really just looking for some broad, general information for a newbie starting out. There seems to be so much out there, it can be hard to know where to begin.

When you pick up a coin, do you have a little check list you go through in your head? Is there anything you look for right away that you know is more likely to be sought after?

Those are tough questions to answer generally. The first thing that comes to mind that may be subtle and universal is a lamination error. However, the more subtle it is, the less it may be worth.

A lot of valuable error types are "in your face", not subtle. For instance, broad-strikes, off-center, struck-through, die caps, etc.

Beyond that, much depends on what coin you are picking up. There are known varieties (not really errors) for specific coins to look for.

Sorry, there's no real way to answer generally. If you find something interesting, please do post it for opinions.

Very true. Pick a starting point, like one series. I don't know what you're interested in but, start there and learn as much as you can about it while dabbling in other things. Trying to be a generalist just won't work.

I do (somewhat ) but the checklist depends on what coin I pick up. Stick around, read questions and answers and I personally guarantee you'll learn something every day.
