Hi There! I saw an article online where someone had a 1977 Nickel certified and it was uncirculated, they auctioned it for almost $250. Other than things like dates, for a newbie, how do you know when its really worth it to get a coin certified? I have a few error coins that I feel may be worth it but I get alot of mixed reviews, I am concerned that I may have a luck of the draw response with certification. How certain should you be in your own research before sending something off?

The best way to be more certain of the value of your coins is to get yourself more educated. That can be done right here. Post a topic with the coin in question, share pictures, try to make them clear pictures and then sit back and wait. The knowledgeable members here will share their opinion, free of charge, and then you will know if certification is in the future of said coin.
Don't be discouraged if the 1st few times you get told - nice try, but no cigar. Most newbies and seasoned collectors alike have their false alarms. Keep trying, and you will hit that jackpot.
Rest in Peace

I use a limit of $200 for expected value before submitting.

Other collectors and dealers have different ideas on minimum value.

Of course you can make it very easy and just buy what you like already encapsulated.

The rule of thumb is that the value certified needs to be sufficiently above the value raw to at least pay for the cost of slabbing.

The whole point of this hobby is to strive for the level of knowledge necessary to make those decisions on your own. You have chosen a more difficult and arcane path with uncommon errors; in many cases there simply isn't enough record - or too few people who actually know about the error - to determine appropriate valuation.
