I'm a very casual Canadian coin collector from pocket change and the last few years I've narrowed my collecting focus to roll hunting quarters so when my neighbor asked if I would check out his elderly aunt's small collection to get an idea of it's worth I jumped at it . Silver content alone there's six or seven hundred dollars (at current silver prices) worth of older silver dollars, 50 cent pieces, quarters and dimes... I didn't look for errors/varieties but what really caught my attention was the plastic wrap package (or whatever its called) of 1973 coins and there was the elusive large bust quarter I've read so much about in the forums here and elsewhere! I told him all the above so now he's going to take the whole collection to the upcoming local coin show and see what the experts say. Anyways I wanted to share my excitement to have finally seen one!

Wouldn't that look good in your collection? Before he gives it to a dealer, offer him a fair price and you may be rewarded for your help so far. Good luck and keep us posted please.

I believe that most of the large bust 1973 quarters were actually in the 'uncirculated' (pilo-film) sets; I have only seen one that wasn't in a set, or didn't appear to be taken from a set.

I have found 2 while roll hunting, I don't know if one would be able to figure out if they were originally from a PL set or not.

Quote: I have found 2 while roll hunting, I don't know if one would be able to figure out if they were originally from a PL set or not. Wow! I have heard of people who have looked for decades, and not found a single example! You are one lucky guy! of the few "loose" large bust quarters I have seen, I made a guess that all but one or two were from an uncirculated set, because of the condition of the fields and/or detail of the coin; I am unclear when the mint started rolling coins, but have observed that even mint rolled coins to get slightly nicked up... If the coin is absolutely spotless, odds are it was pulled from a pilo-film packet - and unfortunately many people are still doing this today to "cheat" and complete their circulation collection.

both coins are not spotless, one has the evidence of roller marks across the bust, the other is better but obviously circulated.
