There are specialty books for certain coins, a general around good book for all varieties is the Cherry Pickers series.

An excellent descriptive book for errors and die varieties is Price Guide to Mint Errors 7th Ed. by Alan Herbert. It utilizes the PDS(Planchet, Die, Strike) system for describing everything that can happen to a coin but does not list specific coins like Cherrypicker's.
