My 1943 has vdb on the front sleeve. Is this normal?

Yes. All post 1918 Lincoln cents have Victor David Brenner, the designer of the Lincoln Cent, initials. This was done after a 10 year gap when his initials were removed from the coin, after much outcry about his initials became displayed too prominently on the reverse beneath the wheat stalks in 1909.
