Many times, my inbox will have quite a few question regarding cleaning or conservation. NCS (A firm owned by NGC) has a nice photo gallery of conserved coins.

Of course, this is "professionally" cleaned, and not to be considered "bad" by the market place.

Look at the before and after pics and judge for yourself. Take special notice of photo number two.

Who else could get this piece by NGC?

Some of those look like a dip in "tarn off" did the trick. I am alway dubious about any sort of cleaning...even "professional" cleaning.

WOW,some of those look really great !!!!

OK, NOW LOOK AT PAGE 3 ON THE LINK AND LOOK AT THE 10 AND 20.00 GOLD AT THE BOTTOM...THE FACES ON THE COINS SEEM TO BE "SMILING" IN THE "AFTER" PICTURE...I MEAN their MOUTHS ARE EVEN TURNED UPWARD IN A SMILING POSITION.

MAYBE THEY ARE JUST HAPPY THEY WERE CONSERVED !

TOO FUNNY..IS IT JUST ME? CAN ANYONE ELSE SEE IT ? I SWEAR I HAVENT HAD A DRINK TONIGHT..........

By George, Grovey, you're right! The "after" Liberties have smiles whereas in the "befores", they wore frowns. And I don't drink at all. And I don't think I'm hallucinating.
Rest in Peace

If I or anyone else were to "conserve" a coin using the exact same materials and techniques as NCS, NGC and PCGS would body-bag it while ANACS would append a "Cleaned" on the slab's label and give it only a Details grade. I reckon the pedigree of the conservator is supreme when cleaning coins.

I do not understand why some of the gold coins were treated at all because I cannot see anything wrong with the before picture

I find that particularly true of the 32 $10 Indian.
