Hello everyone,

I'm an archaeologist working in California. I've found a US military token, and trying to find out more about it. If you have any clues about its origin, or particularly it's use, I'd be fascinated. Thank you!

The token reads:

Company G
1st Batallion of Infantry
California
US Volunteers
320
J.H. Mouse S.F.

And on the reverse there is a cross with the word RED written across it.

My best guess is that it's Spanish American War era because of the Moise stamp and the military information, but I'd love to find out more. What would a token like this be used for?

Thanks for any information you have! I've had trouble tracking down a nearby library with token resource books which is why I'm posting here.
Rest in Peace

Appears to be a dog tag or equipment tag.Notice also is a Company G listed as founded in Nevada City, CA

Where abouts found may point to time of service. Only ref to 1st Batt, CA Infantry is Civil War muster

The JH Mouse is manufacturer maybe. If Red is scratched in, could mean a nickname, hospital supplies or logistics mark. they would tag shipments with this kind of tag. Think this may be a Civil war tag, not later.

Nice one, perhaps Civil War, but could be anywhere 1861-1903. Perhaps the Philippine Insurrection?

Very very cool tag, or whatever it is.

ALSO, I suggest posting this on the US Militaria Forum (www.usmilitariaforum.com) as they would know a lot more about that than many people here (just sayin)
