Two of the four Morgan silver dollars that are in the coin collection that I inherited have strange anomaly's that I can't identify. A 1884 O, and a 1886 O. The 84 has an anomaly on the reverse, and the 86 has one on both the obverse and reverse. What makes this really strange is that they both have the same anomaly on the reverse! I would like your opinions and thoughts on them and I'll start with the 84 and post the 86 later today. thank you for looking!

That's a clash mark, the transfer of the Phyrgian Cap to the reverse die. The series is full of this feature and it becomes list-able when there is letter transfer. See the attached link and welcome to VAMming..http://www.vamworld.com/Attribution+101#DC

Thank you for the information and the link. Is it common to have the same clash in the same spot two years apart?

Very much so.

Here is a link to a listing of some of the more popular clashed die varieties. http://www.vamworld.com/Elite+...#043;Dollars and this is only a fraction of the die pairings that clashed during use.

It may help to understand what a clash is, and forgive me if you already know this.
A clash happens when the hammer die hits the anvil die with no coin in between. With no coin to accept the strike, the dies "clash" and portions of the design from each die can be imparted onto the opposite die. The "lower parts", usually the fields, are the most protruding parts of the die and therefore get the most damage. Therefore it makes perfect sense that a clash will be similar to another clash of the same series regardless of year. There can be variance, but it would be more common to have similar clashes.

I think your 1886-O may be a VAM-16A. http://www.vamworld.com/1886-O+VAM-16A

Thank you Coinfrog! I'm trying

BTY, Napa fires are @ 77% contained! However, we had a casualty yesterday when one of the water trucks that supply water for the large fire trucks hit a guardrail and rolled down a steep embankment killing the driver. My heart and prayers go out to his family!

Thank you moxking! I just received my new Carson microscope two days ago. This one ables me to take full images of coins unlike my older one. So far I'm pleased with the results.

Dave700x, in order for it to be a VAM-16A, is the said coin need to have the die scratches shown in the pics from the link that you posted?
