During the medieval era, almost every small city that had earned the right to mint, minted small coins like this one. Also called small denarius.
Obv: Head with knight helmet & chainmail protection on the neck.
Rev: Long cross
Mint: Gent
Year: ZJ (ca. 1200)

Interesting coin, do you know if these were ever cut into fractions? I note the long cross is Voided. The English voided short cross/long cross had a voided cross to act as a template for cutting into fractions, moving to a solid cross when this practice ceased and smaller denominations came into circulation.

( in Dutch) tells the story about how people paid, traded and cut the coins whenever they needed small changes

@Coinfrog I believe so. It's a very nice little city, lots of history. I was there for a few days a few years ago. I liked it a lot better than Brussels.
