My dad gave me this coin 40 years ago. Found it again today while cleaning my closet. Any ideas?

Your coin is a Roman Republic denarius. Anonymous type circa 211-208 BC. Bust of Roma on the obverse and the Dioscuri on horseback.

Looks authentic and may have been part of a necklace(discolorations at 11-1-5-7 positions).
At the time it was minted the Romans were fighting the Carthaginians for supremacy of the Mediterranean in the 2nd Punic War.
A nice piece of history - which is likely why your dad gave it to you.

I have been reading about Roman coins all day now. From what I have read it seems like the Romans minted these coins (with the crescent between the Dioscuri) in 207 BC then again in 194 - 190 BC. I am leaning toward the 194 - 190 time frame. Any experts have any thoughts on this?

There are 4 phases in this dioscuri-coins : the first with only the townname Roma on the reverse in exergue , the 2th with a symbol + Roma , the 3th with the mintmasters name in monogram + Roma and the 4th with the name of the mintmaster written + Roma . You have also to check the size and the weight because the denarius and the quinarius have the same images in the beginning . Your coin with the crescent belongs to the second phase . albert
