Recently picked up this 1883 Indian Head cent with crazy die breaks/cuds on reverse. Are there any references for cuds/die breaks? What do you all think about it?

It looks to have a couple of Retained Cuds but I couldn't find a listing for 1883.

That is from the 1883 Variety 18 die pairing, where Obverse 23 is paired with a severely cracked Reverse W. Reverse W has not formed any die breaks, but exhibits heavy die cracking. The web page may be found here: http://indiancentvarieties.com.fqdn...iety018.html

1883 Variety 18a is tentatively URS-7 in regard to rarity; however, I have only seen 5 examples inlcuding yours thus far. Of the 5, one is plated in the book and the other was an XF with a number of hits on the obverse and reverse that I sold a couple of years ago. In my opinion, I have priced the variety at 50%-100% premium for the Variety 18a die state. Examples in AU and mint state would be closer to the 100% premium or higher.

Reverse W degraded rapidly and it is difficult to determine how long Reverse W remained in service. Variety 18 is certainly an interesting die pairing and I think it is worthy of seeking out.

Wow, that is some quite in depth research of die pairings! I think your speculation that reverse W degraded quickly is probably true considering the magnitude of the die cracks and the rarity census of the coin so far.

I think it would be pretty neat to get this coin slabbed by ANACS, especially considering they are the best in certifying varieties, even obscure ones like this. Also, its a decent XF condition and would be a nice collector piece if someone sought out this pairing.

Again, thanks for all the research and info you shared. People like you are what makes this community such a great place to discuss coins.
Regards,
Eric
