They have 2 types of coin pages. Archival grade coin pages and Heavy Duty vinyl pages. I like the heavy duty ones since they're stiff than the other one and I find it easy to use. Although it doesn't say PVC free does anyone know whether the Vinyl pages are equally safe?

If it's the Supersafe pages that you are are referring to, I don't believe that they do have PVC in them. Here's a link to their website: http://safepub.com/

Don't get the CoinWorld pages. I had gotten some from JP's Corner and they are junk.

I bought it from JP's too before and didn't like them. Too flimsy. That's why I want to go for the Lead Dog heavy duty ones as they're stronger. But before I buy I want to make sure they're PVC free and safe to store the 2x2s.

On the CoinWorld pages, some of the pouches were shut together and trying to open them to insert a 2x2 tore the page.

I didn't have that problem with mine, I just find it too flimsy.

Just got off the phone with Bent-krueger customer service. He said vinyl pages are NOT PVC free and not meant to be used for long term storage even if the coins will be in stapled 2x2s.

All vinyl pages by chemical structure will contain PVC. The question is how much and how soon it will cause problems. Mylar or Polypropylene are 2 of the more stable flexible plastics. I have used both. The vendor is correct, except no one will define what a "short time" really is and under what conditions of humidity, temperature, and Ultraviolet it is.

I obtained a collection that had been in storage for over 20 yrs in heavy vinyl pages with 2x2 stapled, and less than 1% of the coins showed some contamination. However, there was pronounced toning on the edges of many of the silver coins that were close to the staples themselves ( about 1/4 inch away). That is not removed with acetone! People don't like coins with toning at 4 points on the edge. So I am moving away from stapled 2X2 except as a somewhat security holder for coins to immediately sell or mail with possible return. It always seem the coin with the PVC damage is a 1908-S Indian cent and not the 1903 and so on..... Jim

Jim, moving away from 2x2's mean we should go with something like Intercept or Air tite which is rather expensive. I guess its safe to store in 2x2 as long as other conditions are such as temp is good.

Coming from my experience, I have set up this scenario. I know some don't like TPGrading, but my higher value coins are currently going to TPG companies to be graded and sealed. This is will keep the coin safe for a long time and make it easier for my heirs to value. The next level of nice condition , but not necessarily expensive coins, go into hard plastic shells, or into polypropylene sleeves and then a mylar flip. Third level coins I want to sell or trade into vinyl flips or 2x2s. Loose low level like common circ wheat cents in Ziplocks Also, Intercept has boxes, which provide more protection to 2x2 or mylar flips. I use them for my encapsulated and to be encapsulated coins. http://www.brent-krueger.com/boxes.html down near the bottom. But many of the coins I enjoy are not in the above situation as I do think I would get bored if I just stuck them into a safe in plastic. I want my eventual heirs to be able to do what they wish with them without getting taken. Jim
