I recently bought this. If you would closely look the at the dress panel at the bottom, you will notice a strike through.

Any ideas as to how this is caused or what it is?

Cool. Looks like a die crack or gouge. It's interesting how it stops at the back of the shoulder and doesn't continue into the field. It's almost too wide to be a die crack so I'd lean toward a gouge.
