Here is an interesting set of four 1870 fifty cent pieces - a copy (proof coin in the lower right), a counterfeit (lower left - from the late 1800's?), a "replica" in the upper right (recently minted in China) and of course the real thing in the upper left corner. Image: 1870Reverses.jpg101.99 KB Note that the China "replicas" are appearing in quantity now. They are made from cast copy dies, so under magnification, its easy to see the graniness of the cast dies.

G'day, that's an interesting set of four, indeed. How much is the variation in weight ? Peter

That's a very helpful comparison! If you have an even larger, more detailed photo that would serve as a useful reference here. As a collector of older Canadian coins, I will need to scrutinize future purchases very carefully.

Peter, getting the weight's of all 4 coins will have to wait for another day. They are all packed away somewhere and in 2x2's. But the China "replica" weighs a few grams less than the real thing - and this is quite noticable.
As for a larger picture, I can produce that. But this site only accepts 100kb images. I have yet to find a site where I can post larger images and link them back here - that too is for another day.
I made this image a few months back and was going to post it on another forum, but decided against that because of the style of comments that are routinely given there. This site is quite different - very refreshing in comparison. So the coins have been packed away (for now).

mkb, since I think the larger pic would be very useful, I would be happy to host it myself. Email me, and I'll put it online.

Kurt, I don't have enough posts yet to send an email to you. But you should be able to send me one. Try it, and let me know if it goes through. Also, how big an image would you like? 500 kb? Let me know.

mkb, I put mine on photobucket and they are quite large. If you do that, you can then use the img tags to link it here (they provide them at photobucket as well after uploading your picture). Thanks for the comparison picture, it will definitely be a good resource. Edit: Helps if I give the link as well. https://www.photobucket.com

I look at four coins and the sharpy one is not a real one .What make me say this is the leafs around the coin are not positionned the same as the others.

Andre, the only real coin in the image is the one in the upper left corner of the picture. The other 3 are not. The proof coin is a "copy" (stamped on the obverse side) and can be obtained on ebay. The one in the upper right corner is also a copy, but its sold as a "replica" on ebay and can be had via regular auctions. The one in the lower left corner appears have been made for the purpose of counterfeiting given the material it is made out of.
