Hi everyone, I just got this very nice, slabbed Philip I (95-75BCE) Tetradrachm. While it is professionally graded, I'm curious how you would grade it. Also, does anyone know where my coin was minted? Oddly, the slab does not identify the mint. Thanks!

Nice looking coin, Borders are off flan on obverse and reverse, but the strike is very nice. I'd say 4/5 or Vf+

Same here, VF+. Sadly I am biased and if a coin is really rare I often say "VF+ for one of these" when normally it is just VF but this coin of yours is a classic and is actually in a non biased opinion VF+.

echizento & louisvillekyshop - Thanks for your thoughts on the grade of my coin! Hmm, now I'm starting to worry that the NGC people overgraded it. haha
Honestly, while I've been collecting ancients for about 15 years now, this is my first silver Hellenic tetradrachm. So I'm still learning.
I have no plans to sell my coin, but do you guys have any guesses as to the insurance value of my coin?

All things considered: wear quality of strike completeness of design style flan quality patination. I agree, VF+ For an insurance value, interploate Vcoins prices for averaging price vs. condition. Those coins are currently available for sale, so prices are current as well. That way, you don't have to interpolate auction records for price vs date when sold. You can include this information as well, but you need to have some idea of price trends in the international market over the period you decide to consider, for this coin type. I will leave you to have a bit more fun for homework.

echizento, louisvillekyshop, & sel_69l - thanks for the help and your opinions! Believe it or not, NGC graded this coin Choice EF. Do you think that they overgraded it? Either way, I'm happy with the piece as my first tetradrachm.

There is a pretty fine line between VF+ and EF. Although I very much appreciate NGC grading most of the time, it might be a tiny bit over VF+.
One thing for sure - I really love your selection.

I think that NGC has over emphasized the wear factor, and graded that part according to Sheldon, not British grading standards.
Sheldon is only really useful for American coins, although it can be applied to World modern machine struck coins.
Sheldon should definitely NOT be applied to the wear factor in ancient coins. As I have indicated above, there are a lot more other factors that contribute to the grading of ancient coins, although NGC seems to in part, recognize these other factors.
I just stick to the grading clues provided by the British and European auction houses, when it comes to the grading of ancient and hammered coins.

moxking - Thanks! I've loved ancients for quite some time, and I kind of feel like I've hit a numismatic milestone by finally taking a dive into finer and rarer pieces.
sel_69l - Thanks for the advice!

Here is one of mine, yours shows more reverse detail than mine does.
