Hi Gang,

I just thought I would share this coin with you. I love coins that have a real connection to History.

This coin was used to pay the Roman 3rd Legion which was under the comand of Marc Antony. It was in the battle of Axiom that Marc Anthony teamed up with 60 ships of Cleopatra of Egypt to fight Octavian for the command of Rome. As you know it ended when Cleopatra took off and Marc Anthony abandoned his forces to take off after her. Both lost their lives shortly after.

Ancients are truly amazing to me. To know that this coin circulated before the Christian religion was even a thought gives me chills.

nice coin!
was axiom another name for actium?
that was the battle in richard burton and elizabeth taylors epic film anthony and cleopatra.
if I remember right the coinage was minted to pay anthonys troops before the battle, I think he had at least 23 legions!!!!
he lost so I suppose they pretty much got wiped out in one day?

Nice coin catman! Is the denarius the likely coin referred to in the New Testament for which Judas betrayed Jesus? (40 pices of silver?)

no, the coin showed to jesus when asked whether jews should pay tribute (taxes)to the romans was a denarius of the emperor tiberius.
the pieces of silver payed to judas by the jews for betraying jesus was the local currency circulating at the time (not imperial roman coinage)
the actual issue of coin is known and I believe fairly common.
