I am sorting through an old collection and came across about a dozen very low grade Indian Head pennies and noticed that two of them were almost twice as thick as the others. The dates are pretty much illegible but they weigh 4.2 grams instead of the normal 2.9-3.1 range of the other Indians.

Did Indian Head pennies change composition, or planchets, or are these fakes? Pictures coming.

Yes. 1859-1864 were copper nickel and were thicker. (1864 was a transitional year and both types were minted)

Normal weight of the CuNi cents was 4.67 grams. I think 4.3 is within tolerance and accounting for wear.
