I recently noted that I was after a 1924-S DDO-001 for my collection. Found a nice one in a roll and put up some pics here. But before I finished wrapping up my hunt for this one and could move on, a couple other things dropped in. Turns out the one that will go in my collection is this one, which I bought for a heart-stopping $0.99 off ebay (plus shipping) a couple days ago.

The details around the date are so sharp you can see the actual right angle notches in the 2 and 4 and not just blurry things. And the superfat 9 is a plating issue as that number really isn't THAT large on the DDO.

I also cherry picked two more off ebay last week in nice VF condition while the hunt was on. So now I have the one I like (plus three more) and can move on to hunting up my next target.
Rest in Peace

That doesn't make sense as it's not a plated coin.

Hmmm. So maybe not a plating issue which I suppose is not technically correct. How about a "flaking" issue or "lamination" issue? Who knows, maybe some copper left near the 1 and 9 from the previous coin were struck there.

Either way, the 9 has extra flaky bits of copper making it look too large. Just wanted to make that side note since this is a class 6 doubled die and the thickness of the 9 is an important thing to look for. Don't use that as a comparator on this coin.

Sorry about the snow and haze but it's in the 2x2 now.

Good finds, especially for that price. The fat 9 doesn't seem that pronounced. Might be a tiny delamination.

Big Congrats ! The dimensions on that 9 seem to go beyond the class VI distortion. The 9 might have taken a hit to spread the metal a bit and jump start some lamination.
