Please tell me what you think. This is the only one of these I have and I like it but don't know what it would grade.

The first thing which jumps out at me is that this coin has been cleaned.

The RedBook states for F-12
Half of each olive leaf worn smooth.
On your nickel I think we're seeing more than half.
So it's less than F-12

For the coin to be VG-8:
The motto must be clear - It is
The rims can be slightly worn as long as they're even - They are
Part of the Shield Lines must be visible - Almost all of yours are.
So I'd say this coin is better than VG-8

So I'd grade this at VG-10 cleaned.

Cleaned? What jumps out that this has been cleaned? I'm not saying it hasn't I just didn't see anything that jumped out at me.

Is that a scan or digital photo?
That coin is much higher than VG based on the rev star detail alone. The stars are almost never separated below Fine and this series is plagued with weak strike issues. Not sure about a cleaning or not, first glance says no to me. If it is a scan, that can make coins look "washed out". I will call it VF25

For comparison, I found two other 1882s, one certified PCGS VF20 and the other VF35

It's a photo. Thanks for the links. I agree it appears to fall between the 2 you showed. So if I sent it SEGS I could expect an AU 50 back LOL

scmoore: I would assume some might interpret the color of the coin in your photo to mean that it has been cleaned. It has a very pinkish cast on my monitor, for example. I'm guessing that the white balance on your camera needs to be adjusted for the type of light used to make the photo. If you can get the picture color to match the coin's true appearance, that would be ideal.

If the coin really is pinkish, then that indicates some kind of environmental damage, because it isn't normal for nickel alloy coins.

Hunter

I will take a closer look at it when I get home tonight but I did not notice any pink when I looked at it. Thanks for the input.

I think this nickel just makes VF-20 details.
