I started nickel hunting earlier this month. I am keeping anything pre- 1965 as that is the first instance of the Queen Victoria bust that I love occurs. I also stack any variety years post 1965 while I search to go through them for varieties. These are the years 1996, 1990, 1980, 1977 and 1965. Finally any coins that I find have a nice patina or interesting coloring I keep for my own sake and not for really value.
Good luck hunting!

arvan, since you're in Canada, was curious as to how often the 1970 coins showed up. I've only found one ever.

I keep all pre-1960s nickels, why? I have no clue! I've got several rolls full of a certain year and I plan on selling them on ebay. I'm not much of a error guy so I don't really look for pre-1960 errors unless they really pop out at me! My advice, would be to keep them and try to sell a roll or rolls of a common year, that's my opinion! And of course save any wars, buffalos and V nickels you find!

And I keep all the 68S, 69S, & 70S mint marked nickels also. Don't know why as there have been so many millions minted. I guess it's just an "S" mm thing.

Mark - it's an East Coast thing for me. Finding S mint cents especially, but not so much for nickels. Puts a smile on my face. I've put together full rolls for each of those dates, but then sifted through keeping the better specimens and releasing the rest.
I eventually got to the point of lightening the load.

Markus, it's good you're saving those as there's actually a little bit of a market for those coins, along with the 68-D, 69-D, and 71 Philly coins. I've also started saving the 65, 66, and 67 coins as their mintages aren't all that high relatively speaking.

If you are talking about 70's coins they come up all the time and usually in really good shape. Much better shape than the 80's coins save for '80 and '81. For whatever reason '80s coins are just terrible in terms of lustre and look. I think that has to do with their composition where they are 75% copper and 25% nickel whereas previous they were 99.9% nickel. I have maybe found one or two that are even remotely passable for adding to my collection so far. If you are asking about 1970 in particular, it is one of the rarer years for sure. You don't see as many when you are roll hunting. I have come across a few but much less then others. They only minted 5.7 mil that year compared to 27 mil the years sandwiching '70.

I like to save pre 1960 nickels. I mostly get them at work when I open rolls. I have almost a roll. Wish I were getting them faster. I might put together a circulated set in the future so it's good to have a lot to look through and see which ones I like the best. Don't see many rolls on ebay.
