As some of you know, I found a hoard of cents at one of my local banks about two months ago. When I made the visit, I was only going to get $5 worth, but I soon noticed the rolls were all very old-style, bankwrapped rolls, so I took $10 instead... the next day I went back and got all of the old rolls - a total of $28 worth. The vast majority were from United California Bank, though there were also a scattered few from Union Bank. I soon discovered that these rolls had been sitting since 1974!

As you can see, there were also some Uncirculated coins there - all 23 of the 1974-S coins were Uncirculated, and came from one roll mixed in with Uncirculated 1974-Ds. I found two Original Uncirculated rolls of 1974-Ds and one roll of 1973-Ds amongst the coins.

Very interesting to see what CRH must have looked like 43 years ago on the West coast! And I certainly didn't mind adding 583 S-mint Memorials to my collection. By the way, I have not gone through the 1970-S coins yet for the Small Date variety. Hoping I pull at least one!

That is pretty cool! I have to admit, I am extremely jealous of you folks to the south still having copper. I am having fun with my Nickels now but man oh man... do I ever miss penny coin roll hunting. Copper just looks so much nicer and you get way better chance for awesome toning!

John77, a very interesting haul! LOL, I used to spreadsheet the dates until a year ago, (healed from OCD perhaps?). One interesting point of comparison between today and back then, the "pickin's" are almost identical with regard to date/mm ratios among both LMCs and LWCs. The only big difference is what one might expect, the percentage of Wheat cents is much higher. In 1974 seems that @ 2% were the ratio then, today's ratio is running at .5% per 2500 average(for me, 4 years running). The common date LWCs are quite similar in take between then and now. Guess its population and location that still matters!

Congratulations on a great score. It's wonderful to hear that you took the time to snatch the rest. Looks like lots of nice uncirculated, too.

Thanks, all!

It was a very fortunate experience. Timing is everything. Indeed it was $28 well spent! Unfortunately, I missed out on nickels, dimes, and quarters that had also been turned in by the same person. But, at least I got something pretty cool! And as I recall, pretty much all of the silver coins were out of circulation in 1974 from my best childhood recollections.

By the way, there were actually 296 coins that I would consider full BU in that batch, 200 of which came from the aforementioned 4 rolls:
1968-S (1)
1970-D (1)
1972-D (6)
1973(P)(1)
1973-D (92)
1973-S (1)
1974-D (171)
1974-S (23)

This looks lke a lot of fun. I recently ad someone ask me to go thr9ugh his Dad's rolls. They were 1982 and before. I have a lot of pennies from before this era so am not sure what to do with his rolls. But it was like going back to the time I was a kid looking trough them all.

You should ask the bank if they recall the person who dumped all these old rolls having dumped any other denominations also might be some silver

SantaFeBoy, this was two months ago, and as per my comment earlier in the thread:

The tellers there told me someone had brought in a bunch of coins of the four denominations about a week before I got there, and they had "given out" the rest already. The $28 of cents were all that was left. Also, probably didn't miss out on all that much silver, as it had all been pretty much pulled from circulation by 1974 anyways. I could never find silver coins other than War Nickels as a kid!
