Opinions On 1830 Capped Bust Half?

This is a series I am not very familiar with but liked this coin in hand. I only have these crappy photos that I took in a local coin shop. The coin appeared uncleaned to me and has some attractive toning that is not in the photos. I was wondering what you could tell me based on the limited info these pictures give? Its being held for me at $360. When I get this coin I may submit to NGC or PCGS. Do you think it will straight grade? Do you think it has a shot at 55, or even 58? And which TPG would you recommend for it? Thanks!

I'm not a fan of this coin unless it was much less expensive. Probably dipped, and imo definitely not worth resubmitting to NGC or PCGS.

Here's one already in an NGC holder for $350, and there's a 6% ebay bucks offer today.

Nice obverse strike. Stars are struck up. Hair detail is great. Great luster and I don't see much rub. Looks like it could be 55 or 58. The issue with this coin are the two large scratches on the left obverse field. You could fall in the details scratched rabbit hole. I would say that you are 60% likely to fall in. $360 seems high for this. I would gamble at $200-250, but a brick and mortar coin shop has overhead to contend with.

The lower 1/4 of the reverse is obscured? ANACS blue label holders are good for authenticity and not much else. Buy it as though it were a genuine piece with AU level detail.

$360 is "all the money" for a Top Tier certified AU53 which this piece is not. It also does not have images from which a sound judgement can be made. I'd pass without a 30 day return privilege and a full refund including shipping and handling charges.

I would never pay $360 for a 1830 au-53 in a blue ANACS slab. If the toning is there, it's NOT showing up in your pictures like you stated. So all I'm left with is a judgment call based off of the slab. Blue ANACS slabs are largely distrusted by the numismatic community. That was a period of turmoil before the ownership changed. Many of these coins were overgraded and cleaning was overlooked so you should expect to buy them at a discount. Perhaps a bargaining tool that you could use in your favor if you are confident with your own eye.

The first thing I noticed was the scratches. I would be afraid of a "details" designation from the top two grading companies.
I would hold out for a nicer example for that kind of money.

Lots of folks appear to be grading the holder and not the coin!

I'll reserve judgment until I see the in-hand photos. Odds are it's been wiped or dipped at some point, but then again, so have most of the other CBH's on the market. Truly original skin brings a substantial premium, even on common date / variety coins.

Thanks guys. I was given a "courtesy" hold until I go back in and put a down payment on it. I can still back out if I do it soon (next few days). I will go look at the coin again when I am not rushing to get to work as I was when I took these photos! Keep the opinions rolling as I am getting different opinions on different venues and really appreciate you all!

It's a strong strike...but that scratch in the obverse field is killing it for me. Also, what's up with the nostril? Something looks funny there, or it may just be the angle of the photo? I can tell that the toning is good, it's just hidden in the photos.

What's the significance of the blue ANACS holder? Am I missing something here?

Guys I'm gonna take your advice and leave this one at the store. I will go back on Friday to look at it in person one more time but I already told them to take it off hold. Thanks for the valuable advice.

I love the quality of the strike but if the photos are accurate I would pass.

Yes. It's older and from a previous, transitional owner of ANACS that were known for poor and over-grading grading. They did fine on authenticity though.

Of course you will occasionally run into a bargain in these blue label slabs because many (most?) collectors avoid them like the plague.
