Do you think this is an 1945 S over D? I can't find any information if this is a reported variety or not.

Considering all the wear on the devices around it I think the S is too strong.
I suspect an added mint mark.

There are no S over D listings on Variety Vista or Wexler's and it does not match any RPM listings on either so it may be an artifact from a circulation hit and further circulation wear.

I understand why you would ask. I'm not certain what is under that S but it does look like there is something hiding in the weeds.
Rest in Peace

Agree with the damage, seems most likely. Nobody would add a mintmark to a 1945 merc, except possibly as practice, and I highly doubt that is the case here.
