A Continuing Thread ~ Post Your Tokens, Medals, Exonumia Acquisitions

I received this Alaskan Golden Souvenir Dollar from biokemist6 for Christmas during the 2015 Secret Santa exchange. I only shared snapshot images of it back then, but I recently shot it again with better equipment. All the pertinent information is on the paper envelope it was issued in, so I've included images of that as well.

1901 Pan American Exposition

There were numerous varieties of Encased Cents for this exposition and for many others.

This is one of the more commonly found varieties for this exposition but the price was right and the condition is acceptable. ( for me anyway )

I might have another Encased Cent around here, I don't really collect them but since this is for the Expo, I'll have it! Next thing ya know, I'll be looking for others.



President William McKinley was assassinated while he was at the 1901 Pan American Exposition.
On September 6, 1901, the 25th President of the United States, was shot at the Temple of Music in Buffalo, New York.
He was shaking hands with the public when Leon Czolgosz, an anarchist, shot him twice in the abdomen.
McKinley died eight days later on September 14 of gangrene caused by the gunshot wounds. He was the third American president to have been assassinated, following Abraham Lincoln in 1865 and James A. Garfield in 1881.

Probably out of the 100 medals in the set, this is one of the most elusive and most sought after when bought by itself. I think it is simply beautiful.
It is quite heavy at over 2 troy oz. Mine is still protected inside the card and untarnished. It will have to stay that way.



Nefertiti was an Egyptian queen and the Great Royal Wife of Akhenaten, an Egyptian Pharaoh. Nefertiti and her husband were known for a religious revolution, in which they worshiped one god only, Aten, or the sun disc.
With her husband, King Akhenaten, she reigned at what was arguably the wealthiest period of Ancient Egyptian history.

She is most likely the step mother of King Tut, as her husband King Akhenaten had an affair with his own sister who became pregnant and gave birth to King Tut.
This was normal among royalty to keep the bloodline in the family.
In c.1348 BC Ankhesenamun was born to Akhenaten and Nerfertiti, making her Tut's half-sister. At the age of ten Tut married her. He died at the age of 19.
King Tutankhamun was a hobbled, weak teenager with a cleft palate and club foot. And he probably has his parents to blame as a result of incest.

This medal shows the famous Thutmose, Bust of Nefertiti.

They're together now and looking better than I expected and definitely better than this picture.

Two candidates that I think I can soak and properly conserve to look much better than they do here.
