cptbilly Pillar of the Community United States 2008 Posts	Posted 09/20/2023 7:10 pm NOT a Medallic Art Co medal, though the sculptor ( Ralph J. Menconi ) did many medals for MACo. This is from Presidential Art Medals' (PAM) "Great Religions of the World" Series. It is 44mm / 1.75 inches, and was struck by Art Medals, Inc. (AMI). AMI was founded in 1972 in Brookfield, CT, by former MACo production director Ray Rute. Originally intended to be a 25 medal series, Menconi passed in 1972 after completing the first 16 medals. Two more were created by sculptor Adlai S. Hardin and released in 1974 and 1975. "Doolittle Raid on Tokyo' features then LTC James H. Doolittle on the obverse, as portrayed by sculptor Edward R. Grove. Grove did the William Penn medal posted by commems : https://www.coincommunity.com/forum...y_ID=3902075. Grove joined the Bureau of Engraving in 1936. Nine of his steel engravings appeared on USPS issues. A brief bio of the artist can be seen here: http://medallicartcollector.com/edw...ography.html Accompanying literature quotes Grove re: the medal's reverse: "I chose the historic moment which followed his successful take-off, showing his B-25 as it cleared the pitching deck of the Hornet. Members of the standby crews, gunners, and crewmen from the carrier, line the railing of the platform behind the position of Captain Marc A. Mitscher, skipper of the Hornet. Details of the design were based on several official USAF photographs." A total of thirty 1.75 inch medals make up the series. Medals were packaged in a box with lid as shown. The pamphlets are mini-history lessons. A silver edition of each medal was also offered, limited to 2,500. The Doolittle medal is (c) 1967. It would take a great deal of perseverance, money, and luck to assemble the entire set, with the original packaging. I felt fortunate to find this example in good condition. The USMint Navy Bicentennial medal was the primary objective. The USMC challenge coin happened to be part of the lot, along with some medals and Spanish War Veteran pins. Whole lot was $15.00. . .
